Garnacha Unveiled, from Cariñena to the World

Garnacha/Grenache is a rising star on the world wine scene. On the heels of the Global Garnacha Summit in Napa last April, DOP Cariñena (the event sponsor and Spain’s historic birthplace of Garnacha) is on a road tour around the US sharing insights from leading winemakers and industry experts on this increasingly popular grape variety. Pedro Ballesteros, MW will take seminar attendees on a deep dive into the varietal characteristics of Garnacha/Grenache; how it performs in different regions and terroir around the globe; and how it’s interpreted by renowned producers worldwide. This Masterclass will address the resurgence of the historic variety, current market trends and future prospects. He will share how sommeliers and retailers across the US are getting behind the quality and value-driven wines of Garnacha as a comparable option to Pinot Noir and red blends. Nearly 90% of trade professionals surveyed at the 2018 Global Garnacha Summit agreed that Grenache/Garnacha falls into the category of a “discovery wine,” and the majority view “discovery wines” in their inventory as critical to sales. Masterclass participants will taste a range of Garnacha/Grenache dominant wines from rare, old vine Garnacha to fruit-forward styles from DOP Cariñena and other influential wine-producing regions worldwide.
